PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE PRAYER
James 5:13–18 and Matthew 18:18–20.
Friends, it is one thing to pray to God and a different thing altogether to make an effective prayer.
Today, we will try to discuss what or how to make an effective prayer giving biblical examples.
1. For you to make an effective prayer, you should be faith-filled in dependence on God
The story of Elijah in 1 Kings 18:36–38, reading it with James 5:17–18
Elijah prayed with confidence in God, not in himself. He expected God to answer, and fire fell from heaven. He was human like as but he trusted in God fully and God answered him.
From the above, we learn that, Faith does not deny circumstances; it trusts God above them.
2. one should be righteous and have a repentant heart
If we consider David in these texts, Psalm 51:1–12; Psalm 32:3–5
We learn that when David confessed his sin sincerely, his fellowship with God was restored.
God responds powerfully to prayers from clean and humble hearts. Psalm 51:17.
What do we learn from the above? Confession clears the channel of prayer.
3. One should have personal prayer while in private suffering
Personal challenges should first drive you as a believer to personal prayer.
Look at Hannah as in 1 Samuel 1:10–13
Hannah prayed silently and deeply before God in her distress.
“She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish.”
God hears prayers spoken from the heart, even when no one else hears them.
4. One should also participate in corporate prayer in serious need
In some situations, agreement and shared prayer are required. Fellowships and at times having prayer meetings together eases the burden.
Like how the early church did or lived as in Acts 12:5–12
Peter was imprisoned, and the church prayed together continuously. God responded by sending an angel to free him. Prayer was made without ceasing by the church to God for him.
United prayer invites divine intervention in every situation.
5. One need alignment with God’s will in binding and loosing.
Effective prayer aligns with heaven’s purposes. It is important to always ask for the will of God to be done as opposed to wanting your desire to be met.
Take the example of Jesus in Gethsemane as in Matthew 26:39
Jesus prayed in submission to the Father’s will. “Not as I will, but as You will.”
God’s power flows from surrendered prayer.
6. Dedication to show earnestness and persistence.
Look for example the persistent widow as in Luke 18:1–8. Jesus taught that believers should “always pray and not lose heart.”
Friends, persistent prayer demonstrates trust and dependence in God. God honors perseverance, not passive prayer.
Finally, James and Matthew teach us that effective prayer is not about eloquence, volume, or numbers, but about faith, unity, righteousness, and alignment with God.
Let's desire to emulate the disciples in our discussion today and we will always make effective prayers.
God bless you.
Shalom
