PERSEVERANCE IN THE WILDERNESS
The wilderness is a place of despair and discouragement, where everything feels dry and empty. Our once-fruitful lives may now seem barren. Like the Israelites in the desert, we may feel as if we are wandering in circles—going nowhere and producing nothing.
In these seasons, we may feel distant from God, questioning if He even cares. We may wonder: Has He hidden His face from me? Has He forgotten me? But even in the wilderness, God is present and working.
Beware of the Sin of Grumbling
One of the biggest dangers in the wilderness is grumbling. The Israelites, despite being rescued from slavery, constantly complained. They exaggerated the comforts of Egypt and wanted to return, forgetting that they had been in bondage.
Grumbling is not the same as lamenting.
Lamenting is when we pour our hearts out to God, expressing our pain while still turning to Him.
Grumbling is when we turn away from God, criticizing Him and speaking negativity.
Complaining keeps us stuck in the wilderness. But trusting in God moves us forward.
How to Persevere in the Wilderness
1. Don’t Give Up
When everything looks hopeless, trust God even when you can’t see anything good. Faith is believing in what we do not yet see (Hebrews 11:1).
2. Wait for God’s Timing
The wilderness is temporary—you are just passing through! Even though it may feel like you've been there forever, God’s timing is always perfect.
3. Hold onto God’s Promises
Stand firm on His word. God has promised to bring beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3) and to lead you to a good land (Deuteronomy 8:7).
4. Lean into God
Listen for His voice in the quiet.
Spend time in His Word—it is your spiritual food in the desert.
Pray and worship, even when you don’t feel like it.
Encouragement from Scripture
Galatians 6:9 reminds us:
"And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
Your wilderness is not your destination—it’s just a season. Keep walking, keep trusting, and soon, you will step into the promises of God.
