Every life style has its own principles and rules that guides people who belong in that particular life style.
One of the principles used in the worldly life style to guide people who love to enjoy life with worldly pleasure is You only live once (YOLO), this means that one should enjoy life now because you will die someday. This principle forgets that we were created in the image and likeness of God thus we live forever and the choices you make on earth determines where you will spend your eternity, whether with God or away from the presence of God where there is everlasting fire.
By the grace of God, we have made a choice of the life style that we want to subscribe, and this life style is that of accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and savior of our lives. This life style assures us of life after this life on earth ends. Just as any other life style, even this life style of salvation has its own principles that people who subscribe into it need to know so that these principles could guide their ways of life. In order for one to be so effective in the life style of salvation then you need to build your life around these solid principles.
In the book of Colossians chapter 3 from verse 1 to 11, Paul speaks to people who are made alive through Christ Jesus, he then instructs them of the things that they shouldn’t do as people who are made alive in Christ. From verse 12 to 17, Paul lays down very solid principles that guides this life style of those who are made alive through Jesus Christ. These principles are rooted in love, community, and the teachings of Christ and they serve as the foundation upon which we can build a life of purpose and fulfillment.
1. Put On Christlike Qualities (Verses 12-14): The first principal Paul instructs us is to "put on" certain qualities. As God's chosen people, we are called to embody characteristics that reflect His nature. Compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience are attributes that should define our interactions with one another.
Compassionate Hearts: In a time when empathy is desperately needed, we must lead with compassion. When we encounter suffering, may we respond not with indifference but with a heart that seeks to understand and alleviate the pain of others. We ought to show compassion like how Jesus our Lord did.
Kindness and Humility: This is a call to live a selfless life, caring about other people’s interest more than your own interest. As followers of Christ, we are called to extend kindness freely and embody humility. This means being willing to listen, serve, and put others first, following Christ's ultimate example.
Patience and Forgiveness: The capacity of being able to remain calm even in the midst of delay, problems and suffering without being anxious or annoyed is a sign that one has patience. world will test our patience, and conflicts will arise. Paul reminds us that as we forgive one another—because Christ forgave us—we create environments of grace that enable relationships to flourish. This act of forgiveness not only heals wounds but also fosters unity in the body of Christ.
Love as the base of everything: Paul emphasizes that love is like a glue that binds everything together in perfect harmony. As we exercise these principles, they must be undergirded by love. Love is not merely an emotion; it is an active choice we make daily to seek the well-being of others, reflecting the love Christ has for us.
2. Letting the Peace of Christ Rule Our Hearts (Verse 15): Paul continues to instruct us to let "the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." This peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a profound sense of well-being and assurance in our relationship with God. We are reminded that we are part of a larger community, the body of Christ. Our peace is not just for personal comfort; it is essential for unity within the church. When we embody Christ's peace, we contribute to a harmonious community where love and grace abound.
Gratitude as a life style: Being thankful is a foundation to a life built on solid principles. When we recognize the blessings and grace we have received, we cannot help but express thankfulness in our relationships and interactions. This perspective transforms our outlook, helping us see beyond challenges to the goodness of God.
3. Feed the Word of Christ (Verses 16-17): As the solid principle in this life style, one needs to let "the word of Christ dwell in you richly." Feed yourself with the word of Christ, this is an active engagement with Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts, actions, and community life.
Teaching and Admonishing One Another: As followers of Christ, we have the responsibility to share wisdom and encourage one another in our journeys. This mutual support creates a culture of growth and accountability, fostering deeper relationships and spiritual maturity.
Worship as a Response: Paul highlights the role of worship—singing psalms and hymns with thankfulness. Worship serves not only as an expression of our love for God but also as a means of drawing closer together as a community, reminding us of our shared identity in Christ.
Doing All in the Name of Jesus: Whatever we do, in word or deed, should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus. This calls for a holistic approach to life, where every action reflects our commitment to Christ. Whether in our homes, workplaces, or communities, we should embody the principles of love, forgiveness, and grace.
Conclusion:
As we consider the principles laid out in Colossians 3:12-17, let us commit to building our lives on the solid foundation of Christ's teachings. The qualities of compassion, kindness, and love are not just idealistic notions; they are practical actions that can transform our lives and those around us.
Let us encourage one another, forgiving as we have been forgiven, allowing the peace of Christ to reign in our hearts, and letting His word dwell richly within us. Together, as one body, we can create a community that reflects the love and grace of our Lord.
As we leave today, may we ask ourselves: How can I put on these qualities in my life? How can I build relationships that are rooted in love and peace? Let us strive to live every day in the light of Christ, actively building a life grounded in His solid principles.
