The progressive growth of a Church, just like a normal human being, is determined by its health. This week we receive the grace and teachings on how to become a healthy Church.
God leads his precious people into healthy spiritual environments where their health can be taken care of. 'The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake. Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.” Psalm 23:3-5.

In Proverbs 27 we also learn the hallmarks of relevant healthy Churches that the shepherds are admonished to nurture. It states “Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy heards. The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered” [v 23,25]. In this passage there is indication of an intentional and balanced nurture that the
diligent healthy Church provides to its flock.

First, it provides the 'HAY MINISTRIES'.These are the teachings and discipleship principles that may be stored and used later. It may be marriage seminars for the young Church or leadership management for non-leaders, or parenting lessons for unmarried. They may look optional but they are 'HAY' which can be used as and when necessary.

Secondly, healthy Churches provide 'TENDER GRASS MINISTRIES'. These are ministries and practical teachings for immediate use and daily life situations. They are immediately consumed and digested by believers so that they are wise in their daily life situations.

Thirdly, healthy Churches provide 'HERBS MINISTRIES'. These are medicinal and remedial. They are for urgent and emergent situations and circumstances that the believers may face. Healthy Churches are sensitive to the pastoral needs and support that its members may be in need of. It may be life crisis such as death, sickness, tragedy, conflicts, confusion etc. Herbs ministry is not optional or conditional.

A Healthy Church therefore has a balanced approach to ministry in preparing its members for the FUTURE, the PRESENT and PAST SITUATIONS that demand a healing touch. A healthy Church builds AUTHENTIC processes of discipleship through scriptural holiness, spiritual fidelity and mutual loving and caring ministries to those that fellowship there.

The healthy Churches are therefore built on authentic personal and corporate worship, scriptural instructions, fellowship, outreach and evangelism to the community, active engagement of members into service roles and responsibilities of Gods work, vibrant personal and corporate prayer life.
