Families are in crisis world over. Families of Christian folk are not exempt, being at times the worst hit. Why does this happen? We can attribute it to two factors; firstly families are not rooted and grounded in godliness. This causes a lack of identity. Secondly, families have swallowed wholesale the values of this world's system, and this has led them to take a godless identity that has led them to destruction. In order to fully appreciate this, we have to examine the attributes of a godly family.

According to Ephesians 3:14-20, families ought to derive their identity from the name of Father God. A name represents the attributes of a person. We are to be defined by the attributes of God in our families. In order for these attributes to be engrafted into us, God must perform six transactions according to this passage; first he must strengthen us in our inner being with power through his spirit. Secondly, Christ must dwell in our hearts through faith. Thirdly we must be rooted and grounded in his love. Fourthly we must have the power to comprehend the enormity and complete nature of God's love. Fifthly we must interact with the love of God so that it transforms us and sixthly we must be filled with all the fullness of God.

We can only accomplish this by adhering to the format provided in Deuteronomy 6:5-7. Here we discover that we must begin by loving the Lord with all that we are. Secondly the Word and Covenant of God must be stored in our hearts. We have to treasure it and heed it. Thirdly we must teach train and guide our children into God's heart and love which we have experienced. Fourthly, we must be consistent and unrelenting in this task of godly training of our children.

Failure to do this will expose us to the corrosive nature of worldly values that are as pervasive as they are permissive. A close examination of these worldly values reveals that they are governed by pride. Relationships within the families collapse because people are proud. Unforgiveness plays an important role in keeping these worldly families bitter and angry. This makes for toxic relationships that cause alienation and isolation. People become lonely and angry. These people, especially when they are children and teenagers, become susceptible to drugs, destructive behaviour, addictions and Satanism in all its forms.

God can and does deliver us from evil. Let us remember that God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness and all we need to do is to plug in to this abundant provision. Families will need to repent of neglect of Godly values and the family altar. We must also repent of toxic relationships and make things right between us. Only then will God hear and heal our families.
