Today in continuation with the monthly theme “When Men Pray”, we are again privileged to meet and encounter the most explicit account of what actually happens in the spiritual realm in so far as spiritual warfare is concerned. We are able to get a glimpse of how prayer is the most powerful and the only weapon that can unlock the realities of God’s given strategy of engaging evil forces that are manifested in real life situations in our worldly engagements.

Before we engage on the subject of the “power of prayer in overcoming powers and  principalities, let me explain or define what these terms mean both in the ordinary use and then in the spiritual application.

First, a principality is a state ruled by a prince. Power is the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the choice of events. This influence is exercised by rulers or authorities who can also be said to the powers.

From the foregoing, it is evident how this undertaking is translated in the spiritual sense to represent the same governmental organization in the spiritual realms. Paul took this contextual undertaking of his experience to help believers understand that the same worldly hierarchy of power is also translated into how evil forces of darkness operate. He says “for our struggle is not against flesh and blood [the earthly organizational structures] but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” Ephesians 6:12. It means therefore that the organizational structure of worldly authorities can be influences by alternative spiritual evil forces that operate in the dark world. It means therefore that what happens in the spiritual realities has the effect to influence the world governments and authorities. In the same way God can affect the outcome of worldly affairs if believers involve the power of the heavenly hosts to operate and influence our world positively.

The experience of Daniels account on how he engaged in prayer and how the opposition to his prayer was rescued by the Angel of God is a testimony to the above argument. Daniel’s talks about the spirit prince of Persia who has power and authority to influence the decision of the King of Persia in taking favourable decision that would affect the life and future of the Jewish people.

When Daniel took time in prayer, he faced opposition from this prince starting with day one of his prayer and fasting. Daniel consistently travailed in prayer. However, the interesting thing is that God answered the prayer of Daniel from day one, but the spirit prince held his prayer until Michael helped through his intervention. We cannot ignore what happens in the spiritual realm when we pray.

The following lessons are worth nothing:
1. That spiritual reality of the workings of evil forces against God’s purposes are real.
2. While God answers our prayers faithfully, we are called upon to engage in prayer as the avenue that unlocks God’s promises upon our lives.
3. That the powers of darkness represent evil worldly structures that stand in opposition to God’s people.
4. When God’s people pray to Him, His answer is always “Here I am” Isaiah 58: 9.
5. That like Daniel, we should be concerned by the love of God’s people so that we can continually pray without ceasing for the affairs of the Nation and the welfare of Gods people.
6. That our prayers can influence National and world policies for the good of God’s people.

In conclusion, let us not lose sight of the fact that spiritual warfare is real. God is continually calling us men and women to stand in prayer, in order to influence the world around us. May God open our spiritual eyes to see the battles that we have to fight in God’s name. Our success is guaranteed for God is our help. Amen
